A custom ring appointment does not require a perfect drawing. A few clear preferences, practical limits and questions are more useful. They help the jeweler understand your priorities and help you assess whether the proposed process and piece fit your expectations.

Identify three priorities

Choose three things that matter: a gemstone outline, everyday comfort, a simple silhouette or a symbolic detail. Separate essentials from flexible preferences. Treating every detail in a reference photograph as compulsory can make it harder to adapt the idea to your hand, materials and budget.

Bring a small selection of images and explain what you like in each. You may appreciate the proportions of one ring and the finish of another. Use references to communicate taste and direction rather than replacing original design work with a demand for an exact copy.

Explain how the ring will be worn

Discuss everyday or occasional wear and any existing ring you hope to wear alongside it. Bring that piece to the fitting. Ask about head height, band width and the feel of ordinary movements.

Do not infer physical comfort from a rendering alone. Ask whether a similarly sized sample or another preview is available and what it can demonstrate. A preview may not reproduce the finished piece’s weight, colour and light behaviour.

Set a comfortable budget and a target date

Give a budget range you are comfortable with and request a quotation that explains materials, stones, design work and production. Establish what is included and what changes if the specification changes. An initial price does not necessarily cover every idea discussed later.

State any important date at the beginning. Ask which stages precede production, when approval is needed and what time remains for fitting or adjustment. Understanding the schedule helps you make informed choices before committing to details.

Understand the approval process

Ask how this provider presents a proposal, drawing or digital preview. Which measurements will be shown? How many revisions are included? What happens if you request a change after production approval? The answers should describe that provider’s process rather than assuming every custom order follows identical stages.

Before approval, review the metal specification, stone identity and dimensions, ring size and finish. For engraving, check the exact text and location. Keep the approved version with the order details.

Ask about service after delivery

Clarify resizing possibilities, recommended checks and care arrangements. If you are supplying a stone or existing jewelry, request an assessment of condition and suitability rather than assuming every item can be incorporated into any design.

Our solitaire and halo comparison helps with choosing an overall stone arrangement. A useful first appointment should leave you with a shared direction, an understandable specification and clear next steps, rather than a rushed approval based only on an attractive screen image.
